Cemetery Technician
£19,650 – £22,129 plus 5% uplift for Saturdays and Thursday Evening
Henley Road Cemetery & Crematorium Office, RG4 5LP

Reporting to the Cemetery Supervisor, you will have responsibilities for the cemetery duties including enforcement of the regulations, inspecting, and maintaining memorials, and ground maintenance. You will be responsible for the day-to-day activities for the cemetery dealing and resolving any problems that may occur and carry out administrative and customer facing duties as required of this position – including grave digging and crematorium duties when necessary.

About the role

  • Competent in all core aspects of the cemetery and crematorium service
  • Maintain excellent relations with Ministers of Religion, officiants, funeral directors, mourners, general public, visitors, other service users and stakeholders
  • To assist in planning and coordinating contractors and implementation of cemetery regulations.
  • Administrative duties are conducted in accordance with regulations and methods as specified by the department including the legal requirements and professional Codes of Practice.
  • Ensure all work is carried out with 100% accuracy and with a methodical approach.
  • Adhere to the Council’s Customer Care Policy ensuring a sensitive and caring approach is maintained in relation to the range of services provided
  • To carry out Service Attendant duties as and when required
  • As needed, to be responsible for coordinating large funerals
  • Responsible for the operating and maintaining the cremators and cremulator

About you
The following experience is required for this role:

  • Working in an open spaces environment with grounds maintenance / gravedigger / stone mason or other related skills
  • Good general education; educated to GCSE Level 4 in English and Maths or equivalent.
  • ICT skills in the use of Microsoft office applications.
  • Manual Handling Qualification or similar would be an advantage
  • First Aid qualification would be an advantage
  • Working within a cemetery or within the Funeral Industry
  • Experience of developing recycling of plant matter systems
  • Dealing with the public face-to-face and over the telephone, as well as dealing with a variety of stakeholder organisations.
  • Able to work some Saturdays (all year) and Thursday Evening (summer only) on a rota basis and flexible to adjust working hours to meet operational demands if required.
  • Must be of smart appearance when required to meet members of the public, attend certain meetings or provide cover at customer facing events.
  • Prepared to work towards ICCM COTS (gravedigging) and Cremator Operator Qualification or equivalent
